They also wanted a deep retrofit to bring their bungalow into the 21st century. The Thurles-based pair built their home 30 years ago and had not really changed it in any way since. The architect, quantity surveyor, contractor and landscaper are all ultimately pleased with the end result and team effort, with contractor Paul declaring he is “immensely proud” of the project. The pair sat with Dermot and described their dream home, wanting to connect their kitchen with the outdoor space and garden. The empty-nesters have raised their two children want to upgrade their home's insulation and “futureproof the house”. Jim and Mary wanted to bring their home up to the 21st century and do a deep retrofit of their property, as well as make their home meet the outside for these passionate outdoor people.
Room To Improve viewers were not impressed after this week's episode when Dermot Bannon made a comment about budgets on screen.
Giving Dermot their budget of a max spend of between €140,00 to €150,000, viewers were left in shock when Dermot said that the "tiny" budget wouldn't be enough to cover their demands. By the end of the show, and thanks to QS Clare Jim and Mary managed to stay under their second budget and spend €200,000 on the upgrade to their new home, and ended up qualifying for a grant which covered the cost of the retrofit. The Dublin architect travelled to Thurles in Co. Tipperary where he met with lovely couple Jim and Mary Moloney.
They also qualified for a grant which covered the cost of the retrofit. After being given some options from Dermot, the budget was increased to €210,000. They also wanted a deep retrofit to bring their bungalow into the 21st century.
