A recap of the Critics Choice Awards, remembering the late William Hurt, The Umbrella Academy season 3 is on its way, and more in Link Tank!

He leaves behind an incredible legacy of work that includes star turns in The Big Chill, Body Heat, Gorky Park, and Kiss of the Spider Woman, which earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1986. Hurt was nominated for three consecutive best actor Oscars from 1986-1988 for his work in Kiss of the Spider Woman, Children of a Lesser God, and Broadcast News.” Having believed they fixed the timeline for good at the end of season two, it ended up being a pretty big sucker punch for the Hargreeves to return to their original time and see their dead brother Ben (Justin Min) now alive and kicking.

‘The Power of the Dog’ Wins Best Film at Wide-Open BAFTAs (unknown)

Jane Campion won the best director prize at Britain's Academy Awards for that tense western in an evening that saw a host of surprise winners.

At that award ceremony, Campion garnered attention when asked by Variety about disparaging comments that the actor Sam Elliott made about her movie, including questioning the “allusions to homosexuality” in the film. Campion also won best director — the third woman to take the prize in the award’s history — increasing her momentum ahead of this year’s Academy Awards. She was not present to pick up her award in London. On Saturday she had been in Los Angeles at the Directors Guild of America Awards, where she also won the highest prize.

Kenneth Branagh's film takes just one prize as Joanna Scanlan is 'surprise' best actress.

Its surprising victory over The Power of the Dog in best adapted screenplay confirms the Apple TV release as a serious player. “I’d just like to say congratulations to James Bond 007 for the 60th anniversary,” he said. Campion, who had been at the DGA in Los Angeles the previous night, was also a regretful no-show. Half of the six nominees for best supporting actress were Irish. But Jessie Buckley, Ruth Negga and Caitríona Balfe lost to hot favourite Ariana DeBose for her electric turn as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story. DeBose is now a near-unbackable favourite for the Oscars. “I am someone who sings, dances, acts,” she said. “All hail the streaming revolution, but all hail the big screen too. Last year, best picture, best director and all the acting gongs tallied.

But it has been available on HBO and HBO Max since January, giving more people a chance to see Chastain, who underwent hours of daily prep for the makeup and prosthetics she wore. The “Ted Lasso” star Hannah Waddingham, accepting best comedy series on behalf of the cast, spoke of “the babies in the Ukraine that are being utterly decimated at the moment from this putrid, putrid torrent of abuse. Billy Crystal, the recipient of a lifetime achievement award, also brought up his roots in the region, explaining that his grandmothers were from Odessa and Kyiv and fled to the United States to escape pogroms. “We set out to make our story about the invaluable lessons you mothers have taught us, specifically mercy and compassion, things we need more than ever in the world right now.” And its star, Kate Winslet, won the award for best actress in a limited series for her role Detective Mare Sheehan. Jane Campion just won the Critics Choice Award for best director, capping off a remarkable weekend of wins that also included a Directors Guild Award victory and prizes at BAFTA for directing and best film. “Squid Game” debuted in September and went on to become Netflix’s most watched show ever, according to the streaming platform. It was also nominated for best drama series, but the award went to “Succession.” But an attempt to move into the Globes’ early-January berth was scuttled because of the Omicron surge, and the Critics Choice Awards were forced to take March 13, a date when many film nominees would be in London celebrating the EE British Academy Film Awards, or BAFTAs.
