Cumberbatch accepted the award for director the absence of Campion, who was still in Los Angeles having attended the Directors Guild America awards there on ...
The film is seen as a successor to the likes of Parasite in moving from acclaim at Cannes, where it took three prizes, to a substantial showing at the Oscars, where it is up for four awards including best picture and best director. The awards were decided by the 7,000 members of the British Film Academy, which has undergone a considerable behind-the-scenes overhaul since the backlash to the lack of diversity in its shortlists two years ago. A raft of 220 new rules and regulations were brought in, including quotas for film-makers and the compulsory viewing by voters of at least 15 randomly selected titles in contention. Prince Andrew’s evening at Pizza Express in Woking also merited a mention, as did Oprah Winfrey’s TV interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the drama and tension of which Wilson praised. DeBose paid tribute to the film’s casting director, Cindy Tolan, who earlier in the evening triumphed in her category. This was blurred out in the pre-watershed TV broadcast, which Wilson had previously vowed would not prevent her from delivering as risque a ceremony as possible.
Lady Gaga, Naomi Campbell and Sebastian Stan were among the best-dressed stars at the British Academy Film Awards' red carpet.
(Like several other attendees, Lady Gaga was pictured hours later at the Critics' Choice Awards, which, though held in LA, staged a separate red carpet event at London's Savoy Hotel.) Lady Gaga wowed in dark shades, too, taking to the red carpet in an elegant emerald Ralph Lauren gown that took over 150 hours (and 50 meters of both velvet and silk taffeta) to produce. They were joined by the likes of Naomi Campbell, who wore a black Burberry dress with a square neckline and long cape sleeves.

She continued: "I would like to thank the women of this country who taught me what it is to be in this industry as a dark-skinned woman. "We need to donate, we need to pressure our politicians to continue to create some kind of a refugee safety and a haven here for people who are suffering, and figure that system out. "It was on roller-skates. "We all need to more than wear a badge," he said. The movie was also named best film. While Wilson made good on her promise to deliver a joke-filled ceremony, the night also reflected the devastation happening in the world, with BAFTA chair Krishnendu Majumdar delivering a message from the Ukrainian Film Academy and some celebrities using the platform to raise awareness about the war.
The 75th Bafta awards took place last night, with the ceremony seeing the stars returning to the red carpet for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rebel Wilson gave away underwear, Belfast won best British film, Emma Watson dressed as a swan and Putin got given the finger – it's all here.
One of the only speeches of the night, admittedly, but one of the speeches of the night nonetheless. And now a short film where Rebel Wilson teaches us how to go to the cinema again. But the speech gets to run and run and run and run and run because nobody turned up and Rebel Wilson had to fling all her bras around to fill time. One of the speeches of the night. Cumberbatch is now standing in a crowd of people and, yep, he is definitely the colour of a saveloy. And, unless Rebel Wilson has found any more bits of underwear to throw at professional actors, the Baftas are done.
Kenneth Branagh's film takes just one prize as Joanna Scanlan is 'surprise' best actress.
Its surprising victory over The Power of the Dog in best adapted screenplay confirms the Apple TV release as a serious player. “I’d just like to say congratulations to James Bond 007 for the 60th anniversary,” he said. Campion, who had been at the DGA in Los Angeles the previous night, was also a regretful no-show. Half of the six nominees for best supporting actress were Irish. But Jessie Buckley, Ruth Negga and Caitríona Balfe lost to hot favourite Ariana DeBose for her electric turn as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story. DeBose is now a near-unbackable favourite for the Oscars. “I am someone who sings, dances, acts,” she said. “All hail the streaming revolution, but all hail the big screen too. Last year, best picture, best director and all the acting gongs tallied.

Meanwhile CODA's Troy Kotsur also did the double for best supporting actor at both ceremonies, making him a virtual shoo-in for the same prize at next weekend's Academy Awards. West Side Story newcomer Ariana DeBose also clinched the double in the supporting actress category at both awards shows, solidifying her frontrunner status at the Oscars for the same honour. Will Smith not only won lead actor for King Richard at the BAFTAs, but also triumphed at the Critics Choice Awards the same night meaning Oscar success as the father of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams now seems a virtual certainty for the actor.

Jewel tones made a strong appearance in the red carpet looks of the night. There were many familiar faces walking the red carpet, as a slew of Irish talent stormed the awards this year. Known as the British Oscars, the BAFTAs are always a star-studded event.
From Rebel Wilson's weight loss to Troy Kotsur being the first-ever deaf person to win a BAFTA, here are the key moments from BAFTAs 2022.
Jane Campion brought home the top prize for The Power of the Dog, along with Best Film. Kaluuya was the perfect man to take the collection off the runway and into real life. While introducing Emilia Jones’s performance of “Both Sides Now” by Joni Mitchell, Wilson noted that the lyrics would be signed in both American Sign Language and British Sign Language. “Luckily, though, in all sign languages, this is the gesture for Putin,” she added, promptly flipping off the camera. The CODA star became the first-ever deaf person to win a BAFTA when he scooped the Best Supporting Actor statuette on Sunday night. “Well, clearly it was to get the attention of Robert Pattinson… Just joking, guys. “I thank you for laying the foundations for a woman like me.”
