West Ham fell to defeat in Sevilla but head to the London Stadium with hope.

Rice played in a deeper role than he has done at times this season with Moyes rejigging his team during the match to a 4-1-4-1 formation, away from his favoured 4-2-3-1. The captain continued in this vein throughout the game with numerous interceptions, blocks and tackles, not to mention the way he marshalled his team. Such was the clamour for tickets there were reports from a local Spanish journalist that a number of the €9,999 tickets were sold to visiting fans who made it in with the Sevilla support. The Pole has risen to the challenge for his spot that Areola has brought this season and will no doubt have been disappointed to miss out last night. The night before the match there was trouble in the city but not of the Hammers' fans making. David Moyes called Sevilla the favourites for the Europa League and the toughest test that West Ham could have faced in the last-16.

West Ham vs Sevilla: UEFA Europa League background, form guide, previous meetings (UEFA.com)

A fascinating second instalment of this UEFA Europa League round of 16 tie is in store after competition specialists Sevilla claimed a narrow win over debutants West Ham United in the first leg in Spain. • West Ham were comfortable winners of UEFA ...

• The Andalusian side are appearing in the UEFA Europa League round of 16 for a record sixth time. Since that defeat by Kaiserslautern they have prevailed in all three ties after winning the first home leg 1-0, most recently against Žalgiris Vilnius in the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League third qualifying round (5-0 a). In each of their last two continental campaigns, in 2015/16 and 2016/17, they were eliminated in the UEFA Europa League qualifying phase by Romanian club Astra Giurgiu. They also prevailed 2-1 over the two legs, one of six knockout ties against English teams, including two finals, that Sevilla have won, the sole defeat coming against Leicester City in the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League round of 16 (2-1 h, 0-2 a). • The East Londoners won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1964/65, beating 1860 München 2-0 in the Wembley final, and would reach the semi-finals, final and quarter-finals of that same competition over the next 16 years. His one Liga game against Sevilla was a 4-3 home win on 22 February 2015. A 2-0 home win against Wolfsburg kept them in the hunt going into Matchday 6, but a 1-0 defeat in Salzburg left them in third place. They opened up with draws against each of their Group G opponents – 1-1 at home to Salzburg and away to Wolfsburg and 0-0 in Lille – before losing 1-2 at home to the French champions on Matchday 4. • Sevilla are competing in the UEFA Europa League round of 16 for a record sixth time. • Sevilla have won all but two of the 22 UEFA competition ties in which they claimed a home victory in the first leg, the sole exceptions when they failed to defend a one-goal advantage against Kaiserslautern in the 1982/83 UEFA Cup third round (1-0 h, 0-4 a) and Leicester in that UEFA Champions League tie five years ago. It arrived in spectacular style on the hour from Sevilla forward Munir, who half-volleyed home on the run from Marcos Acuña's free-kick. • A sixth-placed finish in the 2020/21 Premier League earned West Ham a first appearance in the group stage of a UEFA competition.

Sevilla show Europa pedigree to see off West Ham (The Irish Times)

Game of fine margins goes to side with more European experience after El Haddadi goal.

Sevilla had started to press more and West Ham were edgy, the signs ominous when Zouma conceded a free-kick after being played into trouble deep on the right. Marcos Acuña trotted across from left-back to take the free-kick and West Ham momentarily forget themselves, nobody spotting El Haddadi lurking on the left of the area. Antonio was a nuisance, barging past Gudelj before shooting wide, and West Ham seemed certain to take the lead when Declan Rice nodded Manuel Lanzini’s free-kick into the six-yard box, only for Nikola Vlasic to head too close to Bono. Yet there is a robustness to West Ham these days and they did not look out of their depth during the first half. West Ham, who need Jarrod Bowen to recover from an achilles injury before the second leg, had to be more clinical. This was a game of fine margins and in the end it belonged to the side with greater European expertise.

Narrow defeat for West Ham against Sevilla (RTE.ie)

West Ham's first European knock-out tie in over 40 years ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat by serial Europa League winners Sevilla.

The home fans took the noise levels up from loud to deafening and it had its effect when their side took the lead on the hour mark. Munir should have opened the scoring inside the first five minutes, but he headed Marcos Acuna’s cross wide from in front of goal. Julen Lopetegui’s side have lost just twice in the league all season and have the best defensive record in the division, conceding just 18 goals in 27 games.
