On Guimaraes, he added: "Bruno with a bit of Brazilian flair to bring into the team! "That is a way you can win games, for sure, and today they did it. This is what we have to stop because it makes it tough to win games." Southampton host relegation-threatened Watford in the Premier League on Sunday; kick-off 2pm. Hello and welcome to our live blog coverage of Southampton vs Newcastle United from St Mary's. It's the first of four Premier League games away from home ...

A big display from the captain. However, the lack of goals had led some pundits to question his contribution to the Magpies' recent unbeaten run. Pinball in the Saints box! Just seven minutes between the goals. They shout: "Bruno! Brunoi! Bruno!" What a way to mark your full debut Great assist for the goal. Much better after the break. The guy oozes quality. This felt like a home game - only we were in Hampshire and 321 miles away from home on a Thursday night! Played through the pain barrier. Absolutely bossed it with a commanding and composed display. Shone on his return to his old club.

Southampton vs Newcastle final score: Red-hot Magpies battle past ... (NBC Sports)

Newcastle continued their incredible surge up the table as they beat Southampton at St Mary's and pushed closer towards the top 10.

Southampton took the lead and looked like they were going to kick on, but Newcastle’s two goals either side of half time came at terrible points of the games for the Saints. They were probably deserving of a point as Dubravka’s heroics kept them at bay, but this was a display where they had plenty of the ball but did very little with it as the usual punch and zip was missing from their display. 3. New signings make big difference: Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl was not happy when Newcastle postponed this game in January 2 due to a depleted squad amid plenty of cancellations around the then COVID-19 rules, and he argued that Newcastle shouldn’t be allowed to play their January signings in this game. At the other end Joe Willock headed just over. Newcastle’s shrewd January signings are making all the difference in their big end of season surge. This was an all-action display and they bullied a usually ultra-physical Southampton side. Newcastle are in the conversation for a top 10 finish.

BRUNO GUIMARAES will make his first Newcastle United start in this evening's premier League game at Southampton.

Matt Ritchie returns to the squad after recovering from injury, but has to be content with a place on the substitutes' bench. Allan Saint-Maximin is not on the south coast, with the Frenchman missing out on the squad because of an illness that is not Covid-related. Joelinton is unavailable because of a groin injury, but the midfielder has travelled to St Mary's with the squad in the hope of being involved in Sunday's game at Chelsea.

The visitors looked set to kill the game off as they poured forward looking for a third, and Southampton had to scramble to survive a goalmouth scramble as Guimaraes threatened with a header. Brazilian Guimaraes also grabbed his first goal for Newcastle with an audacious piece of skill in the 66th minute, reacting quickest to back-heel the ball into the net following a corner. Bruno Guimaraes scored the winner for Newcastle United with a brilliant back-heel volley as his side came from a goal down to secure a vital 2-1 victory at Southampton in the Premier League on Thursday.
