Chelsea are in crisis but there is no will to leave club on their knees (The Guardian)

Premier League teams and the UK government do not want sanctions on Roman Abramovich to destroy club but swift sale is required.

If Chelsea were to finish third in the league, it would be worth about £34m. Then there are the sums that Abramovich would be permitted to invest within the parameters of the profit and sustainability rules – £105m over a rolling three-year period. That, plainly, has stopped and so, to repeat, it is imperative that the transfer of ownership happens with a degree of speed. The Three deal is worth £40m a year, although it is unclear how much more, if anything, was due to Chelsea before the end of the season. Chelsea continue to try to process the sanctions and argue against some of them. A part of the nervousness at Chelsea involves whether any more sponsors will follow the telecommunications and internet service provider Three in withdrawing support, at least temporarily. The integrity of the competition would not be compromised and it was a theme picked up by Thomas Tuchel. “As long as we have enough shirts and as long as the bus is full of fuel we will arrive and we will be competitive,” the Chelsea manager said.

Chelsea fans urged to end Roman Abramovich chants (RTE.ie)

Chelsea fans have been asked to refrain from chanting in support of their owner and Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich by a UK Government minister.

"I am still happy to be here and still happy to be manager of a strong team. "Clearly this is a time of great uncertainty for all Chelsea fans. "The club’s put a statement out. I know there is a lot of noise around." But the club's future is now uncertain. Chelsea will continue negotiating with the Government over alterations to the current trading licence to allow the Blues to operate as close to normal as possible. In our view, no one is the owner of a football club – you are the custodian of it for the fans and the community." Abramovich also vowed to write off the £1.5billion in loans he has made to Chelsea, and has been determined to see the club taken on by an owner with similarly lofty ambitions for the European and world champions. Abramovich bought Chelsea in 2003 and has led the club to 21 trophies in the 19 years since. The existing licence for the club does not permit a sale, but the UK Government has said it is open to a sale and would consider an application for a new licence to make the transaction possible. The licence can be varied or revoked at any time, and the club said on Thursday it would seek to amend the licence to allow them to operate as close to normal as possible. "And I say that as a football fan myself, and I would just ask them to keep that in mind."

The club could face administration unless the transfer embargo placed on them is lifted at the end of May, a football finance expert has said.

You’d have to pick them up cheaply and look to then sell them on in the future. “The sanctions push (the value of the club) down. “That’s what the Americans are really good at – revenue generation. “I actually don’t buy the idea that an American owner will be too interested in them. “We recognise that this decision will impact the many Chelsea fans who follow their team passionately. “That’s where it probably goes.

Proposals to be considered as long as Russian oligarch would not benefit from the deal.

The club has been granted a special licence to allow it continue to play matches for the rest of the season but only season ticket holders and fans who have already bought tickets will be able to attend matches. Chelsea’s training kit sponsor, Trivago, said it would continue to support the club: “The uncertainty over the current ownership situation of Chelsea FC has been challenging. Hyundai, its shirt sleeve sponsor with a deal worth a reported £10m, said it was “assessing the situation with Chelsea FC”. It has been suggested that the proceed of the sale would be frozen or placed into a charitable fund. Club executives met UK government officials on Thursday and are expected to continue talks in the coming days. “We are examining the details of yesterday’s announcement and we are still interested in making a bid,” his spokesperson said.
