The parents of Gabby Petito, whose disappearance sparked a social media uproar, also accused her fiancรฉ's parents of trying to help him leave the country.
He also allegedly texted Nichole Schmidt from Petito's phone on Aug. 30 to make her think that her daughter was still alive. Laundrie's remains were found Oct. 20 in the Carlton Reserve just north of the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park in Florida along with a notebook containing statements that he was responsible for Petito's death. According to the complaint, Laundrie, who killed himself last fall after claiming responsibility for Petito's death, told his parents what he had done the day after she died on Aug. 27.
The lawsuit contends that Laundrie told his parents on Aug. 28 that he had killed Petito, 22, his fiancee of about a year at the time.
He was also charged with illegally using one of her credit cards before his remains were discovered in the Florida nature preserve. Petito and Laundrie were both from Blue Point, New York, but moved to his parents' Gulf Coast home in North Port, Florida, in 2019. The lawsuit seeks damages of at least $30,000.
