Government excise duty cuts to reduce petrol and diesel cost by 15 ... (Irish Examiner)

The 'mini budget' will see a straight cut in excise rates from midnight on Wednesday.

"The best way is not to shut a border but to ensure you share information. Ministers were told that more than 2,200 people have arrived in Ireland, 40% of whom are children. "The Government is acutely aware of this issue. Ministers heard that a fourth round of EU sanctions is being prepared which will be developed further at an informal summit in Versailles this week. Mr Martin said Ms McEntee had “pointed out” to Ms Patel that Ireland was part of the EU-wide response to the crisis. The key will be to move as fast as possible to deal with the numbers coming in daily. Officials in the Department of Justice and the Home Office are in daily contact, ministers heard. Russia's systemic role in energy supply will have significant impact on prices with implications for inflation and production costs. "We have allocated €20 million in humanitarian supports to go through established agencies in the UN, including UNICEF, and the Irish Red Cross to deal with the crisis on the ground close to the borders by way of providing vital supplies,” Mr Martin said. The Government will reduce the cost of petrol by between 15 and 20 cent tomorrow in a move to tackle rising prices. The move has been called a "mini budget" by sources and will see a straight cut in excise rates. There will be an incorporeal cabinet in the morning, followed by a press conference at 11am with Ministers Paschal Donohoe and Eamon Ryan.

Response to warning over impact of Ukraine-Russia war piles pressure on UK chancellor to follow suit.

“As it stands, 26p a litre of what drivers are paying on the forecourt is attributable to VAT and that comes on top of 58p a litre in fuel duty. Diesel drivers are even worse off, with a tank now costing more than £90 for the first time ever – £8 more than in early January.” Hauliers also said their profit margins were being wiped out because of rising diesel bills and this would have to be passed on to consumers. The finance minister, Paschal Donohoe, said: “We are experiencing the consequences of a war. Drivers and businesses have also been hit by a record daily increase in diesel prices. Figures from the data firm Experian Catalist show the average cost of a litre of the fuel at UK forecourts reached 165.2p on Tuesday, up nearly 3p on Monday’s 162.3p. The RAC said the jump was the largest on record, with data dating back to the year 2000.

Motorists facing costs of €2 a litre for petrol, diesel on some forecourts amid Ukraine crisis.

Green Party leader Eamon Ryan said last week that Ireland had agreed with the International Energy Agency to release some of its reserves to the global market. It will be an enormous challenge at a scale we have never dealt with before,” he said. Measures to manage demand - intervening in the electricity market if power shortages are a risk - were also discussed. The Government is likely to sign-off on a cut in excise duty on Wednesday in an attempt to counteract sharp rises in the price of fuel. Fine Gael TDs want planned carbon tax increases suspended and ... (Independent.ie)

FINE Gael backbenchers have called for planned carbon tax increases to be suspended and for further cuts to excise duty at a private party meeting.

Mr Lombard said such a measure was needed to aid hauliers and the agriculture industry. He said that “such profiteering” is “completely unacceptable” on fuel prices and called it a “barbaric act of cruelty on a civil population”. Sources said that Senator Eugene Murphy also raised the issue and the Taoiseach is believed to have said that the CCPC may look into the recent price hikes. He is understood to have said that price increases ahead of the excise duty cuts, which kick in tonight, are an effort to capitalise on “carnage and mayhem” which has been imposed on Irish people who have already been “so generous” in offering help to Ukrainians affected by the war. Tánaiste Leo Varadkar was not at the meeting as he is on a St Patrick’s Day visit to Latin America. Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney was also absent as he was attending a meeting of the Oireachtas Foreign Affairs Committee. Meanwhile, Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe was dealing with the Finance Bill giving effect to the cuts in excise duty in the Dáil. Clare TD Joe Carey, meanwhile, said that hauliers and the agricultural sector need a better deal and that the initiative to cut excise duty, announced by the Government today, was “too little too late”.

Fuel excise duty cuts: 'A day late and a dollar short' (Agriland)

The extent of the current crisis in relation to fuel prices cannot be underestimated, according to an independent TD.

“I do not want to hear about fuel allowances and everything like that. “The government’s proposals, whilst representing a start, are not radical enough. “Carbon taxes are no longer just a climate change issue.
