Clare and Limerick battle to stalemate as both sides see red in Ennis (Irish Mirror)

With results elsewhere in Division 1A over the weekend, the match was effectively reduced to a dead rubber in terms of League progression.

Clare were more assertive in the third quarter, however, with Limerick lacking punch up front. Clare looked to have taken the lead in the 21st minute through a David Fitzgerald goal though referee Patrick Murphy disallowed it for a square ball offence and at the break a much-improved Limerick held a 0-11 to 0-9 lead. They quickly established a three-point lead within the opening five minutes and held Clare at arm’s reach for the majority of the first half, though the game failed to ignite as a contest with more than half of the scores in the opening 35-plus minutes coming from placed balls, mainly through the respective full-forwards, Tony Kelly and Aaron Gillane.

The Banner almost received a rousing full reprieve by the 21st minute, only for a David Fitzgerald goal to be ruled out. It took the impressive Diarmaid Byrnes only 12 seconds to open the second half scoring but Kelly’s influence eventually turned the tide. Limerick set the pace for the opening 45 minutes albeit without any real comfort.

Kiely and Limerick draw comfort from share of spoils with Clare (Irish Examiner)

In keeping with the majority of this competition, this game will be gladly and quickly forgotten. Notwithstanding the disappointing fare, Clare won't want to be ...

He would convert another three points on an otherwise iffy day for him in front of the posts. However, the umpire didn’t raise the flag to confirm the score and it was eventually ruled out for an infringement by Fitzgerald. Limerick had opened brightly, going three points up to no score up inside the five-minute mark, Tom Morrissey sending over their first from play with the last of those. Jack Browne joined him on the sideline for a double booking, his final yellow seemingly for dissent after a foul on Cathal O’Neill for Reidy’s free that ensured a share of the spoils. Similarly, Limerick’s failure to win a game at the fourth time of asking this spring is not the stuff of All-Ireland champions. Clare mightn’t have been able to kick Limerick when they were down but they will be encouraged by a second-half display where they showed more impetus.

Limerick's winless league start continues with draw against Clare (Independent.ie)

Honours shared at Cusack Park, and so Limerick's winless start to the Allianz Hurling League season stretches into a fourth game even as they finally get ...

They final drew level in the 50th minute, typically off the stick of Kelly – and then almost immediately went ahead through David Fitzgerald. Scorers – Clare: T Kelly 0-11 (8f), D Fitzgerald 0-2, C Malone, S Meehan, R Taylor, R Mounsey (sideline cut), J McCarthy 0-1 each. Both teams advance to the last round of the league, but clearly with more than one eye on the fast-approaching Munster SHC round-robin starting on Easter Sunday. John Kiely’s chosen team was, to at least some extent, a statement of intent. That came in the 73rd minute. But, to their credit, Clare replied with the next two scores from a Tony Kelly free and Cathal Malone – and the remainder of the half continued in that tit-for-tat vein, Limerick stretching three and briefly four points clear only for their hosts to peg them back.
